A number of years ago a small and aging Missionary Baptist church located on Anderson Lane had a visionary spirit and bought property on Duval Road. The congregation chose a new name and affiliation, built a new building and began holding services in February 1981. Pastors Chuck Stevenson, Cliff McGee and Ed Fleming led Bethel Baptist Church in new directions and through new challenges during the early 80's.
Bethel welcomed Gene Strother as pastor in March 1984. As the challenges continued, Pastor Gene proved to have the stability and perseverance to establish a long-term ministry. His musical background has enabled him to help shape and influence the church's style of worship and his preaching ministry adds a strong biblical foundation to the church's contemporary worship services that are relevant, relaxed and refreshing.
Bethel became a Southern Baptist Church in October 1996. The new denominational association has expanded Bethel's missionary outreach and given the church a stronger identity in the Austin area. As the church moves into the 21st century, we have an ongoing commitment to sharing the Good News about Jesus Christ and being a loving, serving and growing congregation that is making a difference in the lives of people at home and abroad.
